How to choose a photographer

How to choose a photographer? What should I look for first? How not to make a mistake in your choice? Probably, these questions are asked by anyone who wanted to take professional photos of themselves. And it does not matter whether it is a model portfolio, photos for a dating site or just a keepsake. In any case, I really do not want to make a mistake in choosing a photographer. Some tips on what to look for when choosing a photographer, read below.

1 Perhaps the most obvious way to evaluate the creative abilities of a photographer is to see his work. It is immediately evident in the photographs that the photographer can, that he can, on what he emphasizes, which genre of photography prefers. Even if you don’t go into any in-depth subtleties of photo-creative work, any person, after looking, can determine for himself whether he likes or doesn’t like the photos of this photographer. If you like, you can already put one plus sign in favor of this photographer.

2 Very good if the photographer has his own website. It is your own website, and not a separate gallery of a couple dozen photos on a free photo hosting site. I do not claim that posting my photo works on free photo hosting sites is bad. I myself placed in such places (links are at the bottom of the page). They are good for some additional advertising photographer, but certainly not for the presentation of his work in general. The presence of your own website indicates the seriousness of the photographer’s approach to their work. In addition, on the site, a photographer can not only post his work, but also tell about himself, his vision of photography, and his preferences. If the photographer is open for communication and acquaintance, this increases the level of confidence in him. What is very important in the joint work of the photographer and model.

3 Another, in my opinion, not unimportant criterion in the assessment of the photographer is the presence of expensive and high-quality photographic equipment. I fully agree with those who now say that it is not a camera that shoots, but a person. Just as the taste of food depends on the cook, and not on the cost of his pots and pans. All this is right. But I will give a couple of arguments in favor of the availability of expensive equipment.

First, expensive and high-quality photographic equipment gives the photographer the opportunity to realize more technically complex ideas. For example, the low-noise matrix of an expensive digital camera allows you to shoot in low light conditions, and more expensive studio light with numerous nozzles and smooth power control allows you to implement any lighting schemes and creative ideas of the photo artist. And, of course, lenses are worth mentioning. It is they who make the picture as it turns out. And not for nothing, lenses, unlike cameras, never become obsolete and never become cheaper. And the fact that you can make a good lens, you can never make bad cheap.

The second argument in favor of expensive equipment is, though indirect, but also, in my opinion, indicative. The presence of expensive photographic equipment indicates the serious attitude of the master to his work. That is, he does not spare funds for the case to which he devotes himself. This suggests that the result is important to the photographer. And not anyhow, but the highest quality. In addition, the presence of expensive photographic equipment gives hope that the photographer is engaged in photography as his main business, and not as a random side earnings. Agree that a person with an amateur or budget semi-professional camera, which he got on occasion, and who decided to earn some money with it, would not take such photographs that would be made by a photographer for whom photography is a way of life. No matter how loud and pathetic it sounds.

4 The presence of special photo formation. Rather, the paper on its receipt. Honestly, I don’t know how to relate to its presence or absence, and whether it is worth paying attention to this point when choosing a photographer. Probably, this would also speak in favor of the seriousness and thoroughness of the photographer’s approach to his work. Perhaps the answer is – if it is, good. And if it is not, it does not mean that you are a bad master. Look at his photo. If they are executed skillfully, then this can speak about the great practical experience of the photographer and the knowledge gained from the special literature on photography. And experience plus literature is a very good independent photography school. Especially if you add here the same attentive and thoughtful study of photographs of other artists. Here we must remember that if a person does not have photographic talent, then no education is able to give it. It is able to develop existing talent. If a person is not able to develop it in himself.

Probably, these are not all the points that you should pay attention to when choosing a photographer. But these are the ones I would pay attention to if I planned to arrange a professional photo session for myself. Although, there is another very important – live communication. Chat with the photographer and see if it makes sense to work with him. I wish you a good choice and good photos.
